Grifola frondosa
The funny thing about common names is that nobody can agree what the “proper” common name is supposed to be. Mycologists call this huge cluster of meaty mushroom lobes Grifola frondosa, the only official scientific name it’s got. But regular mushroom hunters call this autumn prize Hen-of-the-Woods. Or Sheep’s Head. Or Maitake. Some people in Illinois call it Quadeen. Or Quarine. Or something like that.
