Everybody who hunts for wild mushrooms should want to become an educated mushroom hunter.
For example: Can you identify the various species of edible wild mushrooms found in Illinois during spring? Perhaps you recognize morels--but do you know how many different species of morel exist in Illinois?
What about toxic look-alikes?
Here’s help: A spring mushroom class offered at John A. Logan College in southern Illinois starts Tuesday, March 6, 2012 and is open to beginners and anyone who wants to learn more about spring fungi and the morel mushroom in particular. Morel mushrooms are the most popular edible wild mushroom found in Illinois, and they pop up only once a year, during spring.
This will be a three-session continuing education evening course taught for two hours per night, once a week, for three weeks in spring (March 6, 20, 27). There are no tests. No required homework. Anyone from anywhere can register for this class. Learning everything you ever wanted to know about morels is your only real assignment.
