What’s Up
Finding
Wild Mushrooms in Illinois

June

Mushroom hunters everywhere should always be aware there are certain mushrooms out there that can be deadly if consumed.

During June, opportunities to examine some of the deadliest Amanita mushrooms can be found in woodlands throughout Illinois.

One cap or two of Amanita bisporigera, commonly known as the Destroying Angel, can contain enough amatoxin to kill a healthy human, unless drastic medical interventions--such as blood transfusions and even organ transplants--are administered.

The Destroying Angel can occur all summer and even into autumn. It’s not a rare mushroom, and can be locally common.

There is no danger in simply touching a deadly Amanita. Casual exposure to the microscopic spores will not harm you.

No method of cooking can reduce the toxicity of this mushroom.

Never eat this mushroom.

Amanita bisporigera

All Amanita mushrooms emerge from an egg-like sac just below the soil surface.

A veil-like membrane covers the gills when young, then tears away in maturity, leaving a ring or skirt on the stem.
